Seen as a successor to the Mi Max, the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 boasts of greater storage, bigger battery, and a fresh new design for just Rs. 16,999. So, if your hands are itching to buy the Xiaomi Mi Max 2, here are some pros and cons that you ought to consider before buying. In this article, we are considering that you favor a larger display and the Mi Max 2 at 6.44-inches is more than an apt device. So, let’s get going.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Pros

1. Sleek Design

With the Mi Max 2, Xiaomi has overhauled the design elements. With its 2.5 D curved corners and tapered edges, the Mi Max 2 is a slimmer and sleeker version of the older Mi Max. What’s more, it also comes with small and streamlined bezels which make the one-handed mode easy and comfortable. Along with the improved design, the display has also undergone a significant change. The 6.44-inch full HD (1080p) LCD screen is much crisp and bright than its predecessor.

2. Dual Stereo Speakers

Given that the Mi Max 2 is intended to serve the purpose of both a phone and a tablet, Xiaomi has included the multimedia features all too well. So, along with a bright and crisp display, you’ll also get a chance to have an immersive audio experience. Yeah, you read that right. The Xiaomi MI Max 2 comes with dual stereo speakers which kick in when its held in the landscape mode. While the primary speaker is located at its usual place at the bottom, the secondary speaker — a tweeter — is tucked into the earpiece.

3. Amazing Battery Life

Battery life is one of the most important aspects of any smartphone. The massive 5300mAh battery of the Mi Max 2 is a major upgrade from the 4850mAh battery in the Mi Max. With this battery specs, the Mi Max 2 will easily last you two days after a full charge.

4. USB Type C

The Mi Max 2 is the first Xiaomi device in the sub-Rs. 20,000 price bracket to sport a USB Type-C charging port. As you might already know, the 24-pin design of the USB Type-C makes for a faster data transfer rate and charging speed. Furthermore, the Mi Max 2 also supports reverse charging. In fact, it’s touted that the Mi Max 2 can reverse charge an Apple iPhone 7 twice. If you ask me, that’s pretty impressive.

5. Improved Camera Specs

If you were familiar with the camera quality of the older Mi Max, it could be described as below average, at best. While Mi Max 2 has taken a step back, as far as the numbers are concerned (12-MP vs 16-MP), it packs in the same sensor (Sony IMX386) that is now seen in the Xiaomi flagship — Mi 6. Combined with a 12-megapixel and an aperture of f/2.2, the camera shoots crisp and sharp pictures in both natural and artificial light. Furthermore, the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 also comes bundled with the Gorilla Glass 3 protection, which is sure to keep the huge display protected from accidental scratches.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Cons

1. Less Powerful Processor

The Redmi Note 4, priced at Rs. 9,999 is powered by the same processor as the Xiaomi Mi Max 2. For a device which is priced at Rs. 16,999, Xiaomi could have at least put a newer and powerful processor like the Snapdragon 660 or 630 in its place. Though the present Snapdragon 625 isn’t too bad when it comes to everyday usage, the gaming experience tends to get a tad sour with quite a few frame skips in between.

2. Half-Baked Nougat Experience

The Mi Max 2 is amongst the first Xiaomi smartphones released this year that comes packed with Android Nougat. However, the latest build of MIUI 8.5 is yet to feature some of the standard Nougat highlights like the multi-window mode or notification controls. While Xiaomi has announced that the feature will soon make its way to the Mi Max 2, until that time you’ll have to go about your work by switching between different apps manually.

3. No Optical Image Stabilization (OIS)

If you are familiar with the latest phones being launched, surely you must be knowing that the powerful OnePlus 5 lacks the OIS technique. Following close on the heels of the OnePlus 5 is the Xiaomi Mi Max 2. The rear camera of the Mi Max 2 lacks the OIS, due to which videos shot with it appears wobbly and shaky. 3. No Way to Restore Apps

Moving on, the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 doesn’t have any means by which you can restore apps from your Google Account after the first boot. Though it gives you the opportunity of restoring apps from the Mi Cloud, however, that would work only if you are shifting from a Xiaomi device. If you are upgrading from a non-Xiaomi phone, prepare to spare a few hours to get your favorite apps onboard.

4. No Monochrome Reader Mode

Here, I might be a bit nitpicking. But considering the huge display size of the Mi Max 2, you would actually want to use it as an e-book reader from time to time. Though it contains a Blue Light filter disguised as the reading mode, it’s reddish hue tends to sour the reading experience. But then, as I said before, it’s there only when you are looking for it.

So, to Conclude

The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is a great multimedia-focused device. Coupled with its immersive speakers and s great battery life, it’ll surely leave you content. But then, it also has its share of disadvantages, like the OIS issue and the lack of some standard Nougat features. But if you are planning to upgrade from the first generation Mi Max, you will really come to love the Quick Charge 3.0 and the immersive speakers. So, will you go for it?
