1. Turn Off Rich Text Formatting
Samsung Notes app offers a vast collection of formatting options. Those range from simple formatting styles such as bold, italic, bullet lists, checklists, etc., to alignments, changing font color, and increasing the font size for headings. All of them are located in a toolbar present above your keyboard. But if you don’t like that toolbar and you need a blank area to pen down your thoughts, you can disable the formatting toolbar. For that, open any note and tap on the three-dot icon at the top. Select Turn off Rich text from the menu. Note: Turning off the toolbar will not remove existing formatting from your notes.
2. Create Reminder From Notes App
The Samsung Notes app doesn’t support built-in reminders. However, you can create reminders from within the app, and they will be added to the Samsung Reminders app. To create a reminder in the Samsung Notes app, open it, and tap once on the note for which you want to create a reminder. Do not go into the editing mode of the note. Tap on the three-dot icon at the top and select Send to Reminder. Open the Reminder app to modify your reminder details.
3. Create Favorite Notes
Do you access some notes quite frequently? Instead of searching for them, you can add them to the Favorites collection from which you can quickly access them. To add a note as a favorite, tap on it once from the notes list on the home screen. Then tap on the star icon at the top. To view a starred or favorite note, tap on the three-bar icon on the app’s home screen and go to Favourites, Pro Tip: From the side menu, you can also access your Frequently used notes section.
4. Pin Favorites to Top
Having a Favorite notes section is a welcome step for accessing notes quickly. However, you still need to tap several times before you can view such notes. To avoid that, you can enable a feature that puts your starred notes above other notes on the home screen. To achieve that, tap on the three-dot icon on the home screen of the Samsung Notes app. Tap on Sort. Enable the toggle next to Pin favorites to top.
5. Color Code Your Notes
You must be familiar with creating and using categories in the Samsung Notes app. But I’m sure you must have overlooked its color-coding feature. When you add a category to your note, you will see the assigned category color on the app’s home screen. That will help you in easily identifying and distinguishing between various types of notes. To add or change color for the category, open the left sidebar and tap on Manage categories. Tap on the category to edit it. Then choose a different color. Pro Tip: Inside the note, tap on the category name to change it.
6. Retrieve Deleted Notes
Accidentally deleted a note? Don’t worry. With the Samsung Notes app, you can easily bring back deleted notes within 15 days of deleting them. For that, tap on the three-bar icon at the top-left corner of the Samsung Notes app and select Recycle bin. Select the notes that you want to retrieve and hit Restore. You can also empty your Recycle bin to save space on your mobile.
7. Add Favorite Pen
The app offers several pen shapes and sizes to choose from when you are in the writing mode. If you use a certain pen regularly, you can add it as a favorite. For that, tap on the writing icon in the note to open the writing panel. Tap on the pen icon at the bottom. Choose color, style, and size for your pen. Then hit the star icon. To access favorite pens, tap on the favorite icon in the bottom toolbar. You can directly create a pen from the favorites section. Just hit on the add icon.
8. Find the Right Color for Your Pen
When you tap on the pen icon, several colors will show up. If you don’t like the offerings, click on the color palette icon to show the color spectrum. Alternatively, click on the colored dots to add color sets. Swipe between the color sets to choose your color. You can even use a color picker to select a color from within your note. For that, swipe right on the colors. Tap on the eyedropper icon. Pro Tip: You can use eyedropper and color sets in drawing mode as well.
9. Change Pen Style in Drawing Mode
In the drawing mode, tap on the pen to change its size and opacity. Tap on the arrow next to the pen to change the pen style. Pro Tip: Use the pinch in and out gestures on the drawing area to increase or decrease the canvas area.
10. Change Eraser Mode
Most writing apps offer two types of eraser modes – erase by line and erase by area. Samsung Notes doesn’t disappoint. To change the eraser mode, tap twice on the eraser icon in the writing mode. Select the eraser mode. Pro Tip: To clear everything from your writing canvas, tap on Erase all. In the drawing mode, you can change the size and opacity of your eraser. Tap on the eraser icon to show various options.
11. Create Layers Using Selection Tool
Once you write something, use the selection tool to perform various layering actions on the selected item. For instance, you can bring it to the front or push it to the back. Similarly, you can change the color of the text using the Change style option, increase its size, or change its position To perform these actions, tap on the selection mode icon at the bottom. Select the area. Then, tap on Change style or use the borders to change style or position. Tap on the three-dot icon on the menu that appears and choose To front or To back. Pro Tip: Tap on the selection mode icon at the bottom twice to switch between Lasso and Rectangle selection.
12. Remove Drawings and Handwritten Notes
Once you have added drawings or handwritten notes in your note, you can remove them individually without deleting the entire note. Tap on the small minus (-) icon on each section’s top-right corner to remove that particular section from the note.
13. Disable Hyperlinks in Samsung Notes
When you add a URL in Samsung Notes, it is converted into a clickable link automatically. In case you don’t want links to appear like that, you can disable hyperlinks so that they appear as normal text. To do so, open the left sidebar and tap on the settings icon. Turn off the toggle next to Show links in notes.
14. Use the Samsung Notes App as Annotation Tool
You can use this app to annotate on images without installing any third-party app. Open the note and go to the editing mode. Tap on the attachment icon at the top and insert a picture using the Image option. Once added, tap on the image to open and edit it. Hit Apply to save the changes and share it, as mentioned in the next tip.
15. Share Note in Different Formats
You can save and share your notes from the Samsung Notes app in different formats such as Image, PDF, Microsoft Word, or simple text file. For that, open the note from the notes list. Without going to the editing mode, tap on the Share icon at the top. Select the sharing mode of your choice.

Samsung Notes app is a joy to use with the tips and tricks mentioned above. The only drawback is that it lacks cross-platform support. So you cannot use the app on other Android phones or iPhones.
