Speedbit Video Accelerator is a nice application that improves your online video watching experience. It speeds up video streaming and provides smoother playback for videos with bit rates up to 200 Kbps. It works on more than 165 sites, including popular ones like YouTube, Metacafe, Vimeo and Yahoo video. In my experience of using the tool, I found that it failed to leave an impact when I ran it for the first time. But, after restarting the computer, it worked well. When you open the application, you will see the icon on the system tray. Clicking on it pops up a small notification. You can see the cross mark next to HD video acceleration and iTunes downloads acceleration.
It offers four kinds of acceleration:
Normal video acceleration (bit rateHigh Quality video acceleration (bit rate between 100 to 200 KB)High Definition video acceleration (Premium Only) (bit rate >200 KB)iTunes downloads acceleration (Premium Only)
Premium services are not free and you required to pay $19.95/year to activate that service. Right click on the icon and select “Settings”. Here you can configure settings such as load on startup, enable real time video tweeting and setting proxy settings.
After configuring all the settings, play any video on the above mentioned sites. Let’s take YouTube as an example. When you play the video, a small animation appears at the bottom right corner. It means the tool is working properly. You can click on the cross (x) to hide the animation. It keeps running in the background accelerating the video. If you don’t want this option to be displayed then go to settings panel and uncheck the box next to “Show Now Accelerating Message”.
After using this tool you would notice the change in YouTube video loading speeds. They’d load faster than before. However, if you are working in a very slow internet environment then don’t expect any significant improvement in the speed.
